Prof. Ralf B. Wehrspohn
Head of the Fraunhofer Institute for the Microstructure of Materials and Systems
Nano research as the vital success factor
Blazing the trail for innovation in materials and energy
Professor Ralf B. Wehrspohn was invited to come to Halle by both the Martin Luther University of Halle-Wittenberg and the Fraunhofer Society. As the Fraunhofer Society’s youngest institute director he has since 2006 been in charge of the Fraunhofer Institute for the Microstructure of Materials and Systems (IMWS). He also occupies the Chair of Microstructure-based Material Design at Martin Luther University in Halle. Professor Wehrspohn specialises in nano-structured materials and construction elements as they are used, for example, in microelectronic, sensor electronic, photonic and photovoltaic applications.
For the nano scientist his research has a great deal of potential for practical applications: there is urgent demand from industry for a faster pace in the development of new materials, which is at the same time the key to the more efficient use of resources. Ralf B. Wehrspohn regards materials research as the special feature of Halle (Saale) as a research location. He believes that a new and robust bridge is being built here between outstanding basic research and applied industrial research. The basis in Halle, in contrast to other locations, is research into materials and material systems.
